Overview
GRIP is a free trail guide created to highlight the extensive mountain biking opportunities in Rutland County, Vermont. The goal for the cover design was to capture the thrill and energy of mountain biking while giving the guide a bold, modern look that would stand out both on shelves and in the hands of riders.
Concept & Design Approach
The design needed to balance function and excitement. Since the guide serves as both a resource and a piece of community pride, the cover had to communicate credibility while also tapping into the adventurous spirit of the sport. I focused on dynamic photography, geometric overlays, and bold typography to achieve a sense of movement and grit.
Action photography featuring a rider mid-trail instantly immerses the viewer in the energy of mountain biking.
Geometric layering adds texture and visual rhythm, echoing the technicality and precision of trail riding.
Bold, oversized typography with “GRIP” spanning across the cover reinforces strength and control — key themes in biking.
Contrasting color palette of earthy greens and blacks with a pop of red (in “MTB”) ensures readability and draws the eye to key details.
Clean hierarchy of information at the bottom highlights stats and features (“120+ mapped trails, 13 featured events”), making the guide feel both exciting and practical.
outcome
The final cover established GRIP as more than just a guidebook — it positioned it as an essential companion for riders exploring Vermont’s trails. The design’s mix of energy and clarity helped the publication resonate with both casual riders and serious mountain bikers, reinforcing community pride while driving engagement with the local trail network.
